Twitter is bigger than we think…
First of all, all students in the public relations sequence knows how important social media is. Everything is Facebook this, and Twitter that, but how important is it really? As far as I can see – extremely.
In class today, we saw how effective Twitter could be as we setup a hashtag and could see everyone posting and asking questions. I think this is great because some people are shy and feel more comfortable in front of a screen to ask a question. After class a few us were talking about starting a hashtag up for every class and maybe using it as a study program. Here we could all get on a certain time and help each other out and interact to answer each others questions. I think this would be a great thing.
I also don’t think people realize how popular Twitter really is. Today when I was watching my daily news channel, ESPN, it kept popping up about this team and that team are creating rules banning Twitter during practices and games because their players would do it otherwise. A player I believe on Texas Tech was Twittering at halftime and his coached suspended him for one game. I personally think it would be kinda cool to see what players are thinking during a game, but I also realize how it can be a bad thing.
I just found this article about how people will be able to follow Ugandan gorillas on Twitter. There are only 720 of these gorillas left in the mountains and now people will be able to follow their every move and interact with the rangers through blogs and social media websites. I think this is the coolest thing ever. It is a great way for people to realize and maybe even humanize with the gorillas to make people donate money to the gorillas. If this works, think about how this can help other animals and different issues around the world. Like polar bears or maybe even global warming. This could be huge.
Regardless of whatever everyone thinks, Twitter is important and we need to fully understand it. So if you don’t know how to do something, ask or simply play on Twitter and figure it out. It isn’t too hard.
