Competition Is Fierce

As  I get ready to find an internship for the spring it is becoming more clear how competitive it is out there. Teachers and professionals have talked about how scarce the jobs have been and I have been naive I suppose because I have been lucky enough to get inernships. Even when I went to my current internship I went in there thinking I would be one of the more experienced interns, but it ends up I am not. There are people with bachelor degrees, master degrees and just a lot more experience than I have. I have been trying to do my best and make myself noticed and I just hope it is working.

I am thinking of applying for some pretty popular and competitve internships for the spring and I hope I get them. I graduate in the spring with a mass communication degree with a focus in public relations and as I’ve said in a previos post, I need to find a job pretty quick after I graduate otherwise I need to head home. I need to fix up my resume and write strong cover letters to show off my writing ability. I could use some tips if anyone wants to share, I’m up for help from anyone.

Let Bobby Bowden Stay

I grew up a Seminole fan and I went to FSU for two years and when you think of FSU you think of Bobby Bowden. Bobby Bowden is a college football legend. I guarantee every single head coach in the college level, with the exception of Joe Paterno, would give anything to have a career Bowden has had. Bowden has 384 wins, which is second all time and has had 41 winning seasons which is a record that will probably not be broken anytime soon.

Bowden obviously has gotten older and FSU has seemed to have lost a step of team of the past and people are trying to make Bowden retire after this season. Make Bowden retire? Really? The man is a living college football legend. He can do whatever he wants in my book. The problem is that FSU has been a college football elite for so many years that it is impossible to keep up that level of competition and the truth is, a “bad” season in FSU eyes would be a great season in almost all other universities in the nation. Bobby Bowden has won two national titles and 14 ACC championships. Leave the man alone. Bobby Bowden is FSU. Without him FSU would not be nearly as successful or acclaimed as they are.

People need to get off of Bobby Bowdens back. The man has earned the right to do what he wants with his career without having to deal with annoying people who probably are younger than Bobby Bowden’s coaching career. Granted Jimbo Fisher is itching to become the head coach, but you know why? Because of the great football tradition that Bobby Bowden created at FSU. The field is named after Bowden and there is even a National Bobby Bowden Award, which is given to the college football coach who has accomplished the most on the field, in the classroom and in the community.  What more does he need to do to get the respect he deserves instead of being humiliated with being forced out of FSU football. Are you serious? Leave the man alone. He’s earned it.

What am I going to do?

As I learn more and more about public relations and all of the different fields I can go into as a public relation practitioner I am getting more confused of what I want. One of the reasons I love public relations is the fact I can go into almost any field I can fathom, doing their public relations. I can do non-profits, sports, fashion, music or agency. I can go do anything. And even though this is one of the awesome aspects about my major it is also the aspect that seems to be giving me the biggest headache.

I have interned at MOSI and am currently interning with the Lightning Foundation which are both non-profit, yet the Lightning Foundation is for the Tampa Bay Lightning so it gives me access to the sports world. I have loved both of my opportunities so far, but is non-profit what I want to do? I want to know if I would like agency life, I would like to know if I like corporation life or maybe even do some marketing. I want to know and get experience everywhere, but I am running out of time to figure out. I graduate in the spring and have time for one more internship and then I’m in the “real-world.” I don’t have the time I need. I hope I can figure this out and get a good internship in the spring. I am definitely not going to do the non-profit again because I want to be well rounded and know as much as I can about as many different things as possible.

I use to think I was prepared for graduation, but as it comes closer and I closer I realize I don’t know as much as I need too. I hope everything works out and I can figure out exactly what I want because if I don’t find a job quickly after I graduate, my lease will be up and I’ll be forced to move back home and I do not want that. It can’t let that happen.

Thank you college!

Forgive me. This is me needing to clear my mind. I do not intend on offending anyone.

Ever wonder if college is worth it? The late nights. The stress. The bullshit. I know I have once or twice, but you know how you find out if getting a college education is worth it? Work in retail. I promise you, it will make you realize how fortunate you are. I’ve done retail for a few years now and don’t get me wrong I like my current job, but it is my job and not my career for a reason. I couldn’t imagine being 24/7/365 at a retail store and being a minion for corporate my whole life. Sure you might climb the ladder and become a manager and get the honor of wearing a different color shirt than everyone else, but really? C’mon. How could you not want more out of life? I mean it is not my place to judge people because you never know circumstances. But I have come across many educated people, who I personally think could do more with their life. Needless to say I am grateful for the people who are working retail as their career and let me see why it is not what I want.

I am never more thankful and driven for my college education then when I come home from a long day at work. I am grateful that I will not have to work retail because I have no other choice. If for some reason I do work retail again after my current job than it will be by choice, but I can honestly say I do not see that happening. I cannot wait to start my career in public relations after I graduate; it can’t come soon enough.

Again, this post is not intended to hurt anyone and I give it up to the people who chose to work retail as their career, but it is not for me. Not now. Not ever.

Twitter is bigger than we think…

First of all, all students in the public relations sequence knows how important social media is. Everything is Facebook this, and Twitter that, but how important is it really? As far as I can see – extremely.

In class today, we saw how effective Twitter could be as we setup a hashtag and could see everyone posting and asking questions. I think this is great because some people are shy and feel more comfortable in front of a screen to ask a question. After class a few us were talking about starting a hashtag up for every class and maybe using it as a study program. Here we could all get on a certain time and help each other out and interact to answer each others questions. I think this would be a great thing.

I also don’t think people realize how popular Twitter really is. Today when I was watching my daily news channel, ESPN, it kept popping up about this team and that team are creating rules banning Twitter during practices and games because their players would do it otherwise. A player I believe on Texas Tech was Twittering at halftime and his coached suspended him for one game. I personally think it would be kinda cool to see what players are thinking during a game, but I also realize how it can be a bad thing.

I just found this article about how people will be able to follow Ugandan gorillas on Twitter. There are only 720 of these gorillas left in the mountains and now people will be able to follow their every move and interact with the rangers through blogs and social media websites. I think this is the coolest thing ever. It is a great way for people to realize and maybe even humanize with the gorillas to make people donate money to the gorillas. If this works, think about how this can help other animals and different issues around the world. Like polar bears or maybe even global warming.  This could be huge.

Regardless of whatever everyone thinks, Twitter is important and we need to fully understand it. So if you don’t know how to do something, ask or simply play on Twitter and figure it out. It isn’t too hard.

Matt Grothe: Thank you and I'm sorry

Anyone who has gone to a USF football game with me or has talked to me about USF’s football team knows I am not a fan of Matt Grothe and have been one of the fans begging for a quarterback switch. But I never wanted what happened on Saturday to happen to Grothe; no one deserves such luck. If you don’t know what I am talking about, Grothe tore his ACL during the game on Saturday which probably means the end of his football career. He has started since he was a true freshman and has brought our football program to new heights and has helped our school get national recognition. Whether you want to admit it or not, football is what gets your schools name known around the nation and Grothe certainly had a big hand with putting USF on the map.

Anyone who has watched a USF game knows that Grothe always played his heart out and always did everything he could do to make the play. No one can deny that, and it was because of how hard he played the game and how he always gave everything he had that Grothe finishes with 10,875 offensive yard – the most in Big East history. Ever. That is an accomplishment. Whatever you want to say about the guy as a quarterback, whether you thought he was slow or made bad decisions at times he is in Big East history.

So even though I was never a fan of Matt Grothe, I want to tell Grothe thank you for doing everything he did for our school and giving us national recognition and I also want him to know that I am sorry. I’m sorry his career had to end so aburptly and under so unfortunate circumstances.
